Growing Venture: Heavenly Hills Garden Specializing in Plants Not Found Locally

There are no hills at Heavenly Hills Garden in western Owensboro — yet.

But Jezediah Skelton and Christa Sosh, the owners, have big plans and dreams.

"We started it at the first of the year," Skelton said of the family business. "The Skelton family in Indiana has been working with plants for years."

He said, "We want to find a bigger property where we can have greenhouses."

For now, Skelton and his fiancée take orders from customers and drive through the South, as far as Florida and the East Coast, picking up plants from 30 growers.

"We find things that aren't available locally," he said.

Earlier this week, there were 100 or so plants in nine varieties waiting to be picked up.

Sosh said, "We are licensed plant brokers."

She said, "Mostly we sell to individuals who just want one plant or so. But we have one landscaper we're working with. Landscapers get a 10% discount on every order. Others get 10% on their first order."

Skelton said, "When we sell it, we tell people how to plant it and take care of it."

Sosh said, "We can get trees up to 30 feet tall if people want them and we help with installation."

So far, they've had 50 to 60 customers.

"One thing that hurts us," Skelton said. "We have to have people pay in advance. When we were just starting, someone ordered a couple of things. We bought them but never heard from the people again. We can't take losses like that."

Sosh said the dream is that "maybe we can grow the business enough that he can retire."

They sell trees, plants, herbs and bushes.

"We've been together for two years and friends for 15," Sosh said.

Between them, they have seven kids and three grandchildren.
