Ostrya virginiana — The American Hophornbeam is an underappreciated native gem — a tough, adaptable understory tree with handsome, finely textured foliage and distinctive hop-like papery seed clusters that dangle from the branches in summer and fall. Its shreddy, gray-brown bark adds winter interest, and its golden yellow fall color rounds out four seasons of appeal. Exceptionally durable and low-maintenance once established, it thrives in conditions where other trees struggle.
