Carpinus caroliniana — The American Hornbeam — also called Musclewood or Ironwood — is a striking native understory tree named for its smooth, sinewy blue-gray bark that resembles flexed muscle. One of the toughest small trees available, it thrives in wet, shady spots where little else will grow, yet adapts equally well to average garden conditions. Stunning orange-red fall color and attractive ribbed nutlets add multi-season interest, and it's a valuable wildlife tree to boot.
