Jacquemontii Birch
If you’ve ever wanted a tree that looks like it belongs in a winter painting year-round, the Jacquemontii Birch (Betula utilis var. jacquemontii) is it. Renowned for having the whitest bark of any birch species, its chalky, almost luminous trunk and branches glow against a blue sky, a dark evergreen backdrop, or a blanket of snow — making it one of the most visually striking specimen trees available.
Native to the western Himalayas, this elegant birch brings an exotic, refined quality to temperate landscapes. Plant it where it can be seen from a window in winter, and you’ll never regret it.
- Mature size: 30–40 ft tall, 20–25 ft wide
- Exceptionally bright white bark — among the whitest of all birch species
- Triangular to ovate dark green leaves with serrated edges
- Golden yellow fall color
- Upright, pyramidal habit — excellent as a specimen or in small groupings
- Prefers moist, well-drained soils
- Full sun — USDA Zones 5–7
